Final Thesis: Inner Source at Siemens
Abstract: This survey collects academic and practitioner publications concerning inner source, the utilization of open source development processes inside corporate closed borders to loosen up line reporting boundaries and improve development of closed source software products. It presents these publications case-by-case, defines a classification model for inner source within software development organizations, and abstracts common best practices as well as differences between the varying practitioner reports of inner source. As this survey shows, inner source has been gaining traction in large software development companies, but motivating factors differ in groups of practitioners and the actual implementation is highly individually structured. The second part of this master’s thesis consists of six interviews on collaboration of two business units at Siemens Healthcare (sector) Imaging & Therapy (division) by usage of inner source approaches.
