Abstract: Machine Learning is an exciting new technology that opens up countless applications, but building products using machine learning requires much more than just applying algorithms to real-world problems. In his talk, Mikio will cover different aspects that need to be addressed to make the gap, for example, how to identify the right customer and business problems that can be used by machine learning, what kind of technical infrastructure is necessary to build production systems around ML algorithms, and how to organize projects and teams to successfully deliver data science projects.

Speaker: Dr. Mikio Braun is an independent consultant helping companies and people to put machine learning in production. Previously he worked as a manager and individual contributor at Zalando and GetYourGuide where he led teams working on search and recommendation, and supported company wide initiatives like ML platforms. Mikio holds a Ph.D. from the University of Bonn, where he wrote a dissertation on convergence properties of kernel matrices, and later worked for ten years as a PostDoc at Fraunhofer Institute and TU Berlin on applied and fundamental research projects around machine learning, bioinformatics, social media analysis, signal processing.
