Abstract: Software is becoming more and more a key differentiator for many products and solutions across many industries. Building sustainable business models on the basis of software innovation requires the ability to monetize this intangible good. However, you can only monetize what you own. Therefore, an Intellectual Property (IP) strategy as integral part of the overall business strategy is essential for creating respective IP assets to ensure ownership in your innovation. For technical inventions the strongest IP assets are patents. It is a common misbelieve that software innovations cannot be protected by patents. You will learn how to strategically protect such software innovations with various protection mechanisms.

Speaker: Peter graduated in solid state Physics at the University of Erlangen in 1989. He worked in basic research (Fraunhofer Institutes) as well as in industry (Nokia, SAP AG) before founding his own firm offering services in the fields of patenting software innovations and developing IP Strategies. Peter has a LL.M. in Intellectual Property Law and Management from the University of Strasbourg (CEIPI). He is teaching European Patent Law and IP Management at CEIPI and is running the lectures on patent law at the KIT in Karlsruhe. With more than 12 years of experience in the field of strategic IP management he is currently acting as president of I3PM, the I3PM International Institute for IP Management.
