Final Thesis: An REA-Based Embedded DSL for Accounting Transactions

Abstract: Domain-specific programming languages (DLSs) are widely used and are popular for mainly two reasons: improving productivity for developers and improving communication between developers and domain experts. Also, domain experts with little or no programming knowledge can program using DSLs with little or no external support. To achieve a successful representation of a domain, the involvement of both the domain expert and the developer is important. However, this thesis uses an ontology based approach to designing and implementing a small, embedded DSL that allows the user to record basic accounting transactions and extract financial information. The ontology used is the REA (Resources- Events-Agents) accounting ontology. REA is a well-established conceptual framework in the field of accounting and is often used to analyze economic processes and functions.
