Learning from Silicon Valley’s Commercial Open Source Firms
BaCaTeC is sponsoring the development of a grant proposal about commercial open source. The abstract of the grant development grant is:
Commercial open source firms are companies that go-to-market by open sourcing the product they develop. The best known old example is MySQL, sold to Sun (later Oracle) for $1bn. Current examples are MongoDB, Elastic, and RedisLabs. These companies are different from the Linux distributors like Red Hat or Suse, because these firms develop the product themselves (rather than have a community develop the software). This incurs significant development costs. Despite open sourcing their code, the example companies and many others are valued at above $1bn (making them “unicorns” in Silicon Valley speech). How did they do that? Using the BaCaTeC grant, we will visit the Silicon Valley and develop a DFG grant proposal that will lay out a plan to answer this question.

Kommerzielle Open-Source-Unternehmen sind Unternehmen, welche ihr Produkt mit einer Open-Source-Strategie an den Markt bringen. Das bekannteste Beispiel ist MySQL, welches von Sun (später Oracle) für $1Mrd gekauft wurde. Aktuelle Beispiele sind MongoDB, Elastic, und RedisLabs. Diese Unternehmen unterscheiden sich von Linux-Distributoren wie Red Hat und Suse, in dem sie die vertriebene Software selbst entwickeln (statt dies von oder mit Fremden (“community”) zu tun). Obwohl diese Unternehmen ihren Code offenlegen, sind sie in Silicon-Valley-Speak Einhörner (“unicorns”), also jenseits $1Mrd wert. Wie haben sie dies geschafft?
